Historical Facts About Mallorca
 
  Mallorca is inhabited by the human beings around 5,000 years ago this is estimated from the evidence discovered in caves in the mountains and island’s Northern part. But the evidence of first civilization appeared around 1,300 B.C with the Talayotic culture.

Around first century, it is believed that Greeks, Phoenician’s and Romans arrived Mallorca. The Romans were the first to bring civilization to Mallorca and are responsible for building roads and towns and introducing Christianity.

Due to introduction of mass tourism in 1950 the island has made a comeback with increase in the living standard of the people. But this is on the price of resort developments around the coasts spoiling the beauty of the coast.
Catalan was the official language of Mallorca since 18th century which had been replaced by Castilian Spanish. The population of this beautiful island is around 790,763 according to the 2006 census. The capital of Mallorca is Palma de Mallorca which has a population around 383,107 according to 2007 census.

Spanish is the most widely spoken language but the residents also speak Catalan and English and German are the widely spoken by the people of hospitality industry. Mallorca does not have any official religion but most of the people are Roman Catholic. Mallorca is one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.
